ONTARIO, Calif. – California cowboy Wyatt Vineyard (Lincoln, California) captured the first event win of his PBR (Professional Bull Riders) career on Saturday night after going 2-for-3 at the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour (PWVT) PBR Ontario.
The 20-year-old first put himself on the leaderboard in Round 1 on Friday night after being paired with Wild Willie for an impressive 85.70 points.
Despite a less-than-ideal low score of 65 aboard Mr. Bombastic in Saturday night’s second round, he moved into the top spot on the leaderboard as the only man to conquer both matchups in the first two rounds.
Heading into the championship round, Vineyard was laser-focused to make the eight aboard Johny Dang. As his home state fans cheered, he was the last man on the back of the chutes readying to ride. Despite giving it his all, Vineyard came down hard after just 2.73 seconds.
Although his final round ride wasn’t successful, the 2-for-3 weekend clinched the first event win of Vineyard’s PBR career and netted 107 Velocity Global points. He now sits at No. 43 in the Velocity standings.
Velocity Global points contribute to the Velocity Global Standings and determine which new riders are added to the elite Unleash The Beast throughout the season. The Top 3 Velocity Global riders who have not already qualified are also invited to the PBR World Finals in May.
Dione de Souza Ribeiro (Nova Bandeirantes, Brazil) claimed second for the weekend after going 1-for-3.
Ribeiro was paired with Preston’s Pistol in Round 1, where he was no match for the powerful animal athlete- being tossed to the ground after 3.65 seconds.
Early on Saturday he was paired with Captain turning in an impressive 87.70-point ride to move into the championship round.
Entering the final round for the weekend, the 36-year-old launched from the chutes aboard Smoke Scream. Unfortunately, the talented animal athletes of the PBR prevailed yet again, bucking Ribeiro off at 4.57 seconds.
For his efforts, he collected 78 Velocity Global points and now sits in the No. 13 spot in the Velocity standings.
Vineyard’s fellow Californian, Andy Guzman (Oakdale, California) came in third in Ontario.
After being defeated in his first two matchups of the weekend, Guzman still made the cutline into the championship round.
With a determined look, the 22-year-old cowboy conquered his final round matchup against Ezra The Great, turning in an 86.20-point ride.
For his 1-for-3 third-place finish, Guzman earned 64 Velocity Global points and sits at No. 34 in the standings.
Braidy Randolph (Stephenville, Texas), who rides for the Texas Rattlers in the separate PBR Teams league, kept the 1-for-3 trend flowing, finishing fourth for the weekend.
In Round 1, he was paired with Grey Goose. He was successful in the matchup with an exhilarating 85.90-point ride.
In the opening round on Saturday evening, he was paired with Living On A Prayer, where to the Toyota Arena crowd’s dismay, the athletic animal won the match up, throwing the lanky Texan to the dirt after only 1.54 seconds.
Setting his sights towards the championship round, Randolph geared up for his match with Hookie Monster. Erupting from the chutes, he was no match for the fast-moving bovine - securing his fourth-place finish and earning 49 Velocity Global points.
Rounding out the Top 5 at Toyota Arena was another California man, Jairo Castellanos (Dixon, California).
In Round 1, he launched from the chutes seemingly in control, but Gin N Juice prevailed after 2.08 seconds.
Castellanos was then paired with Zoot Suit for Round 2, where to home state fans delight, the bull was no match for the talented 19-year-old cowboy. Scoring 82.60 points, Castellanos soared into the final round of the weekend.
Focused on keeping the momentum going, he was paired with Little Tex in the championship round. Clinging to his bovine partner, Castellanos fell short – hitting the dirt after 1.33 seconds.
For the weekend in his home state, Castellanos earned 35 Velocity Global points.
The talented bull riders of the PWVT will next head to Grand Rapids, Michigan, for the Cooper Tires PBR Grand Rapids at Van Andel Arena Jan. 23-24. In a double-up weekend, the PWVT will also be in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the Silencer Shop PBR Tulsa at the BOK Center on Jan. 23-24.
